La Défense is the central business area in the Île-de-France region of France, within the borders of Courbevoie, Puteaux and Nanterre municipalities in the Paris metropolitan area. It is located on the westernmost end of the ten-kilometer-long Historical Axis of Paris and is the largest multi-purpose business area in Europe, with an area of 560 hectares, 3.5 million square meters of office space, 72 buildings and 180,000 daily employees.
